JPEO-CBD ChemBio Protective Suit PROOF Challenge

By Steven Lusher

The JPEO-CBRND's Chemical Biological (CB) Protective Suit Proof Challenge competition (PROOF: The ChemBio Suit Design Challenge) opened online Aug 19, 2016, and held its kickoff event in Boston, MA, on Aug 25, 2016. The purpose of this Proof Challenge is to attract innovative ideas and technologies, including those outside traditional defense acquisition pathways, for CB protective suits and ensembles. JPEO-CBD is expected to announce winners by the end of January 2017.  Ultimately, DoD wants to develop a protective suit that allows the warfighter to perform his/her duties as if only in regular Battle Dress Uniform (BDU), unencumbered by additional weight, bulkiness, heat, and disjointedness associated with protective suits. The competition's total prize pool is $250,000 (up to three semifinalists will win up to $25,000 each and up to three finalists will win $50,000- $150,000).
